Good Stop by Gail S. at InsiderPages

This mission called the White Dove of the Desert, is worth a stop. This active mission (there are services still being held here as well as a school) dates back to the 1600's. Beautiful inside and out, there is constant renovation going on to keep up it's gleaming beauty. Admission is free (they do take donations). A gift shop is available and it makes for a beautiful photo op.

Nicknamed the "White Dove of the Desert," this Spanish-colonial mission is a living link to the past.

History
Completed in 1797, this Baroque-style, whitewashed mission links the 18th-century Spanish explorers with a modern-day Catholic parish. Father Eusebio Francisco Kino founded San Xavier with the intention of converting the local Native Americans to Jesuit Catholicism. The site was taken over by Franciscan priests in the 1760s and they've been here ever since.

Features
Magnificent inside and out, the mission is a stunning example of Spanish colonial architecture. Though the architect and artists are unknown, their accomplishments are evident in the intricately carved brick entryway, sculptures of angels, carvings of the apostles and vivid frescoes that dress the ornate walls and ceiling. Catholic mass is held daily and visitors are welcome to join the services. There's also an adjacent museum and gift shop.

The most beautiful Mission I have ever seen. It has been restored on the interior and the walls are covered in marvelous paintings depicting various scenes from the Bible. A must to see when visiting Tucson.

  • Pros: Free admission, Wonderful Scenery, Large parking area
  • Cons: A bit of a drive
