Not Too Bad, But A Noisy Place!.
We stayed at this hotel a few times in winter. It's location is very convenient for hiking and going out. It is a somewhat run down resort from the 70s. Built around a large courtyard with a semi-olympic swimming pool (slightly heated) and a bunch of orange trees. Actually quite nice looking. From the upper floors of the four story main building one has a nice view on the Catalina mountains. Make sure you get a room NOT facing the freeway (I-10), which wraps around the property on the outside. This side is quite noisy. The amazing thing is that the freeway noise is not penetrating the courtyard very much, i.e. the rooms on that side are not much affected by traffic noise (the train can be heard quite intensely, though, when it passes through town.
Over the years the place saw some improvement. When we stayed there the first time, it was quite a mess. Then year after year things improved...some paint here, new furniture there, new tiles in the bathroom etc...
Sadly, not everything improved: One of the latest 'achievements' was to blanket the courtyard with quite loud music all day from 7 am to 10 pm (management seems to prefer a ghastly advertisement riddled oldies station playing top 40s from the late 60's to the early 90's-how utterly boring and annoying!). This can make quite unhappy, especially if you prefer to sleep with the window open. They appear to be quite convinced that this nuisance is necessary to improve their appeal. Repeat calls to the front desk to turn down the music a notch in the morning (it is clearly noticeable with closed windows-quite sad when trying to sleep in a bit!) did not yield any action. So, make sure to bring a set of heavy duty ear plugs (I recommend 3M) if you must stay at this place. I am actually thinking this may be the last time we stay here due to this unfortunate development.
I also have to agree with William P.'s review that the service can be sloppy at times, and that they skimp on the shampoo (they will give you more at the front desk if the maid forgets to replenish it...).
In summary, this place could be o.k., but the recent musical onslaught makes it difficult to like it. Think of second hand smoke-you cannot stop breathing-same thing with noise: No off switch for your ears!-So, show some mercy with your customers, InnSuites management!
