Tips for Hair Architects

January 17, 2013

Quick version: So glad Jon decided to take the plunge again and open his newest salon here in Tucson! Went for a cut tonight for the first time and so happy with it!

Long version: :)

I have a mostly "I'm too busy to care" attitude about my hair -- post-shower every day I pull it up in ponytail or a bun. My hair's super-fine and since I'm not one to spend/waste hours primping, trying to get it to do something, I've pretty much stuck with cuts that let me pull it up. And hairstylists that are inexpensive since all I ever really need is a trim (and not often -- no styling means my hair is never damaged). It's hard to find a good balance between getting a good cut and not spending a fortune -- I can't justify $50+ for a cut on a regular basis. It seems especially difficult in Tucson. I can find any number of sub $20 cut places (the few I've gone to have been adequate, but I always feel rushed and never "happy" with the cut -- just ok with it). And I can find any number of pricier places that start at $50 -- and, as I said, I can't justify that (the few I've tried with a "deal" have been fine, but not so great that I'm happy and willing to spend that kind of money again).

I did some searching online and found Hair Architects and made an appointment.

I arrived a few minutes early and found that everyone else was gone or leaving for the night (around 5:15 -- not super late). Jon took me back to one of the rooms (each station has its own room -- cuts down on noise and hearing others jabber -- and each station can have its own music) and then asked what I wanted him to do with my hair. I showed him some pics and then told him that he could do whatever to adjust the cut to my hair (with my hair being so fine, I know it won't "do" many things that I like on others). He asked if I'd shampooed today (no need to bother with that if my hair wasn't coated with product) and what I did with my hair in the morning (nothing -- but I think it was to help determine the cut and whether it could stand on its own if I walk out of the house with it wet). And then he started cutting.

For the cut I wanted, he actually took a razor comb to it. Each layer, all the way around. It's been a long time since anyone has pulled up my hair and cut it in that many chunks. I know I normally get a trim, maybe a few layers, but still, when I get a cheapo cut, very few people bother doing more than pulling up a layer or two to cut smaller amounts for each pass.

My hair was just past shoulder length. Cut down to what I guess is referred to as a "pixie" cut. Jon took his time, kept going back over sections and checking length and blending. Touched up parts with scissors (and around the ears). Worked with my hair and gave me a much better cut than I'd anticipated. I'd rave a bit more, but I'll reserve that till I have a few days of rushing out the door in the morning to work and seeing how that goes (though, I got the cut tonight and have already showered and it still looks as great as it did when I walked out the door). So far, it's the best cut I've had in ages (probably decades -- had a similar cut done about 8 years ago and I remember being disappointed by it on several levels -- probably one reason why I've stuck with a longer length and pulling back since then).

The bonus was that the charge for the cut was on the low-end (despite taking 45+ minutes to do) and with the first time customer deal I found here, it was a steal. But it also means that follow-up/maintenance cuts won't cost a fortune and making an appointment for another cut won't require any thought -- it'll just be something I do when I see the length getting to be a bit too much.

8+ years in Tucson and I think I've finally found a place that won't make me delay making an appointment for the next cut (or cause me to constantly scour Yelp and other sites for an alternative -- like I've been doing for ages).

Solution: FRIZZY, CURLY HAIR. My hair is difficult to manage! Jon (the owner) used the Brazilian Blowout on my hair - it is not only straight, but shiny and smooth. He is very knowledgable and will take time to explain which straightening method is best for you.

I love the way he cuts and colors my hair as well. It has never looked or felt better.

The staff is very helpful and professional. I have also had Alex work on my hair. She has a great attitude and does great work.

It is a pleasure to go to here

Wonderful color and cut. This salon is warm and inviting. Everyone was friendly. My stylist was very helpful in choosing color that would work with my hair. It turned out perfect. My cut was done as I wanted it and the stylist was able to tame a couple of trouble areas I have. I could not have asked for a better experience. I will be going back.

Wonderful people. I went to hair architects over the weekend to get my hair cut on the suggestion as a friend. I had Alex cut my hair and she did a fabulous job. I couldn't be happier with the cut she did. The staff was friendly and attentive to all the clients it seemed like and even Jon (the owner) came over to give me some tips about my possibly thinning hair and how to be proactive about it. I will definitely go back when I need another cut and will be happy to have anyone in the salon do it.

Professional all the way to the grand hair finale!. I used City Search to find a place to have my color done and a new haircut. I recently moved here from Ohio and needed to find a hairdresser as good as the one I left after 12 years in Ohio. This site was very uselful as the reviews make you feel that someone is giving their best opinion of the business and the stylists. I chose John and was extremely happy that I did. He did what I asked for and went above and beyond my expectations and I left very , very happy. The salon atmosphere is very relaxing and the staff went out of their way to be helpful. I recommend John and the salon highly. I was happy that I found a place to give me the service that I was used to back home.

I LOVE MY HAIR!. I told Jon (owner) to pick any color for my hair and I LOVE IT! Thank you Jon! It's the warmest, prettiest color I've ever had :) From now on, you have to pick all of my colors :) My husband also loves his hair :) For the first time in his life, it isn't going every which way ;)

quick and easy. I came in with really long hair that hadn't been cut or touched for over a year. I had an appointment with the owner, Jo(h)n and he did a great job. He was fast, too. The environment is also nice if you have to take small children. I brought in my 3.5 year old son and he was well behaved the entire time because it wasn't all stuffy and boring.

Hello Everyone; The best thing to. Hello Everyone;

The best thing to happen in Tucson of late is our new citizen and hair stylist Jon Nickell.

Jon has been working with hair for years, First on the East Coast, and then Portland,OR.

He is so wonderful. He really listens and understands the experience of cutting and coloring can be very stressful.

I was nervous, because like most of us I had a terrible experience with my hair, but talking with Jon put me at ease, I came to him with dry, very damaged hair.Just with a awesome haircut, my hair feels thicker and softer with no additives or hair spray. It's bouncy and healthy looking again as it should be.

Jon aslo showed me a thing or two about taking care and styling my hair. Didn't try so sell me the salon, just so honest and open. Like talking to an old friend.

Ladies, we all have heard "The way to have beautiful hair, is to start with a great cut".

Well, where can you find that "Great Cut?" Call my new friend Jon @ (971-231-5780

and get yourself beautiful today.

He is a true professional with a wonderful personality. You will love him. And it's not just cuts, he does it all. He will be my "go to guy" from now on.

I just wanted to let everyone know who to visit with all thier haircare needs. ( Just hope I can get an appointment with Jon when everyone learns about him.) LOL--- NO REALLY.

Jon, if you're reading this,---Thanks again, see you in July.

CMackie. If you are looking for a talented and creative hairdresser look no further! Jon has been my hairdresser for over 10 years at his Portland, Oregon salon. Jon has never disappointed me - who can say that about a hairdresser of 10+ years? His beautiful blending of color and his precision haircuts leave no room for disappointment. I was very sad to have to say goodbye to Jon when he recently moved to Tucson -I even considered moving there myself ! Jon is the consumate professional; a talented and an amazing hair stylist . Do yourself a favor and sign him on - you will definitely see what people are talking about. He's the one !
