Quirky, tantalizing, vegetarian, cafeteria-style; Govinda's is an all-you-can-eat restaurant run by the Hare Krishnas.. The Scene:
Hidden in a compound off First Avenue, Govinda's comes complete with an incense and clothing shop right inside the front door and presents a daily variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes, sometimes Indian-oriented but often not. Some of the recipes employ tofu, but soybean haters needn't flee; there are always lots of other options, and the tofu entrees are anything but bland. Diners can eat at conventional tables and chairs in the main dining room, sit on cushions on the floor at low tables in the quiet side room (remove your shoes before entering), or stroll outside to the patio with its peaceful fountain and juice bar. On Thanksgiving, the turkey from Govinda's little aviary is allowed to roam with confidence among the patrons; everyone feels safe and cared for here.
