GREAT!. Go to New Orleans 2x's a year and when I get a craving for some real food this is the place to go. Staff is great and the food is worth the extra time it takes to cook it!
Not worth the money. I love cajun food, so I thought this would be a good restaurant to dine at. However the food here did not come close to meeting my expectations. When the server brought the plates of food, everything looked good. However it tasted disgusting. I could tell by the way by the flavor of the food that it could have been a good meal if the cook had omitted some mysterious ingredient that made my jambalaya taste like gun powder. I also tried the gumbo. It too had the same mysterious ingredient. The red beans and rice were okay. The only thing I will recommend is the steak , which was well prepared and delicious. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very nice and comfortable. All I can really say is that you might have a great meal at Nonie depending on what you order.
A taste of the bayou can be found among the cacti of Tucson's desert. Alligator anyone?.
The Scene
Owner Chris Leonard was so inspired by his grandmother's cooking that he not only uses her recipes, he named his restaurant after her. Nonie's atmosphere is relaxed; the surroundings offer as much comfort as the food. Multicolored glass beads adorn the walls and blues songs waft through the dining room along with the succulent aromas.
The Food
For an appetizer, try the fried gator tails. There's spicy alligator chili too, but for the fainthearted, more conventional options include fried pickles, blackened shrimp and crawfish hushpuppies. Lunchtime brings Louisiana favorites like po' boy sandwiches stuffed with shrimp, oysters or crawfish, gumbo and jambalaya. Fried catfish, trout meuniere and a delicious tomato-based shrimp Creole are reserved for the dinner menu. Can't decide? Try the gumbo and jambalaya sampler served with red beans and rice.
Greatness.... The high prices are irrelevant, because the creole and cajun food is the best in the state. Lunches are inexpensive, the service is excellent, and the daily fish specials are awesome. Best of all is the crawfish boil every Wednesday night.
