Bad Place for Sushi!. Bad place for sushi. I only tried the sushi here, so I cannot comment on the other items they serve at this restaurant. The place was packed full of people with an hour wait on a Saturday so I was expecting this place to be good, but boy was I wrong. I don?t know if it was just that day that the sushi was bad or what, but the sushi here was pretty bad. Everyone at my table order sushi and all of them commented that the sushi was awful. I had way better sushi for a lot less money at other places. The sushi rolls I ordered were not good at all. The sushi rice was mushy and too sour for my taste. The fish wasn?t fresh; I almost threw up eating a piece of sushi with fish on the outside and got a stomach ache afterwards from eating at this place.
Two restaurants in one. Takamatsu serves Korean barbecue and Japanese cuisine..
The Scene
Not content with one cuisine, Takamatsu serves two. On one side of the restaurant, diners in the know feast on authentic Korean cuisine. On the Japanese side, university students and other groups cluster around flaming teppan yaki tables for casual conversation and a culinary show.
The Food
Japanese specialties are pricey by Tucson standards. The premier special is the nontraditional Takamatsu dinner with filet mignon, shrimp and lobster tail, but at $30 for one person, it's not cheap. On a budget? Try one of 35 more reasonably priced Korean dishes or order sushi a la carte. The sushi is fresh and well prepared, and the chefs will even deep-fry shrimp heads on request. The marinated scallops are cooked on your tabletop barbecue and served with eight side dishes.
Good food, but don't go with a group!. Went with a group of 30 for Korean BBQ on a Sunday night. We were seated promptly, but the food came out at odd times and some of it was cold. We were quoted a certain price per person over the phone, but upon paying the bill, we paid $5 more per person than quoted. Also have been with just 2 people. All in all, the food is good, but it is really pricey and the staff is not all on the same page.
Great Sushi! Great Teppanyaki!. I love Takamatsu. Great location, easy to find, and the food is sensational. The seafood is always fresh. Also the house salad with ginger dressing is to die for. Service in the Korean or Teppanyaki rooms for the most part is great. If your going for sushi, definetly sit at the sushi bar. You'll get better and faster service. Some of the Teppan and Korean prices are high, but the quality of the food is worth it. Sushi prices are a great deal, ask about specials when your there. Teppan room is great for groups, and the Korean or Sushi booths can be quiet and romantic. Overall a great place for Japanese, Korean or Sushi!!!! If you go on a Friday or Saturday come early as it gets quite packed!
Japanese and Korean Menu. Yes, the one side has authentic Korean dishes, but also has authentic Japanese dishes, both being reasonably priced. Not really being a fan of the Americanized hibachi or teppanyaki (I hope I spelled that right), my wife and I prefer their regular menu items. The lunch menu is spectacular with a number of Korean and Japanese "lunch boxes" for around $6.00 - $7.00. Great place for lunch or for a dinner of stir fried Kim Chi and pork.
