Editorial Review. Family-owned restaurant serving up authentic Mexican dishes including tamales, chile rellenos, chimichangas, fajitas and more since 1922.
Excellent. El Charro did go through a growth spurt and there were some service issues, but that seems to be everywhere in Tucson... However, the food is awesome and we have had great service the last few times we have dined there. Visit EL Charro, there is nothing that comes close to their food. Period.
Food GREAT - Service habitually BAD. El Charro Cafe is the first Mexican restaurant that I visited upon my arrival to Tucson. To keep this short and sweet - the food is delicious, however the service has consistently been poor the FIVE times that I have visited in the six months that I have lived here. So bad on my last visit, that I had to go and get a beer that was ordered off the bar after watching it sit there for 25 minutes (the waiters are notorious for simply disappearing). I have also had to get up and get water for the table - after being ignored my employees who could see that we needed some assistance. We will not be returning to El Charro, despite the delicious food - as Five strikes and they are OUT.
A week ahead reservation was a surprise?. Corporate sent in East Coast employees, so we set up reservations a week in advance for a group dinner (about 40). We set up reservations with the person in charge for groups, printed & e-mailed invitations & maps for all, & looked forward to trying this highly lauded restaurant. Restaurant personnel appeared surprised by our group. We ended up crowding into the bar, most of us left standing, & waited 30 minutes while they set up our tables. Service ran slow, as we don't think reservations told anyone at the restaurant about the booking, & they lacked enough help. Servers proved very nice, though overwhelmed. Understaffed kitchen produced okay food, but it took an hour to get our food. Not top 50 at all--we since found a better and less expensive authentic cuisine restaurant with faster service near our business. We will not go to El Charro again.
Authentic? Not!!. I had to try this rated top 50 in U.S., but I've got to tell you that it's no where near authentic. I don't recall my dinner buried in lettuce, produce and cheese while in Mexico. As for the service..let's just say that I felt that I was rushed and pushed out the door for arriving 40 minutes before closing. In summery, I was left wondering how this can be highly rated?
