Great food, very bad service, snobish waitresses.
After enjoying good meal at cup cafe for several time I notice a frustrating behavior in myself and other customers which I would like to share with you.
As much as the food and atmosphere are good, Services are really poor. The following list are very weak points that anybody notice it immediately when they enter the cup cafe:
1- waitresses practically don't know what to do when you step in. They send you in for counter then you realize it is full; By the time you back you are in the end of waiting list. It is frustrating that waitresses can not tell you or organize it, what is available and what is not. They do not have any skills.
2-After getting your food Waitresses do not check on you during the meal. You almost do not get a chance to even see them to ask for more water or coffee. You get your coffee or water when your meal is gone. I also noticed the first waitress you get a hold of, they feel ashame or feel embrace that why i am asking them for water or even help. They seem strongly believe thats not their job or why they should help me when another waitresses is responsible for my table.
3- The only time you see waitresses check on you with "big smile" is at the end of the meal when the check comes and for sure they expect a large tip.
Great atmosphere, spotty food and service. This place is a favorite and with good reason - the crowd is cool, the ambiance is terrific, you can sit outside etc. Sadly, however, the food and the service is so spotty that it becomes a gamble. Last night my brother and I tried to get a beer and some nachos. The service was so bad that our nachos came out before our beers. The nachos, sadly, were just a huge pile of chips with not enough toppings to even cover the first layer. I want to love the place and support it so it was disappointing that our experience was so lame. Breakfast, in my experience is the way to go.
Terrible Service, Not So Great Food. If you like your latte weak, your french toast dry, and to be over charged come to the Cup. I asked nicely for a little more espresso in my weak latte, and was told *rudely* that if I didn't like it I can pay for another shot of espresso. The tone of voice from Roberto, our server, was so rude my husband and I nearly left right there and then. We had to ask the server twice to take off items on the check that we did not order or receive. The french toast was dry, and my water cup sat empty most of the meal. Cute place, nice atmosphere, but I'll NEVER go back after the way I was treated.
Hip and high-ceilinged, this cafe is more than your average hotel restaurant..
The Scene
Now under new management, The Cup remains a slice of historic Tucson in a sea of sprawl. Congress doesn't get much business from the railway anymore, but locals and hotel guests help keep The Cup consistently packed. The dress code is as casual as the funky clientele.
The Food
Famished? Thank goodness The Cup serves all day long. Breakfast is big, with better-than-homemade French toast, bagels and lox, or eggs served just about any way imaginable. Lunch and dinner run from the vegetarian Queer Steer burger and chunky salads like the Congress to more upscale hot dishes like smoky veggie polenta or chicken satay. The Cup's fresh limeade is perfect for those thermonuclear summer afternoons. See the bakery case for incredibly sinful desserts made daily.
Great food when you're right downtown.
Sit outside when it's not absolutely boiling. (But don't forget to go inside to see which desserts are going 'round and 'round in the display case.)
Try the Depot Salad (well prepared strips of steak on greens, with tomatoes, mozarella, and a tasty dressing) or the lamb, or one of the specials, which often is some sort of creative fish dish.
The appetizers might be all it takes to fill yourself up.
One of Tucson's Finest. Do yourself a favor and visit this Historic Beauty! Order the Congress Club! It is the world's finest club sandwich, skip the awesome fries and go for the cup of soup for a side. I'm tellin' 'ya, this is a mighty fine lunch and you might even consider sahring the sandwich with your dearly beloved because it is so generous. Also, order a local brew to wash it down! The lounge is fantastic, too. Enertainment galore and funky! I love this place!
Addictive.
Stayed @ Hotel Congress during Tucson Gem & Mineral show in Feb. We loved the hotel & the Cup Cafe so much...found it hard to eat anywhere else.
Great staff in hotel & cafe. Best breakfast.
