Disney Presents The Lion King (Touring) Editorial Review
Overview
Musicals have traditionally served as vehicles for their stars. But one of the most popular Broadway hits in recent years owes its success to its director, its costume designer and its master puppeteer. Even more remarkably, they're all the same person: Julie Taymor. Fusing her anthropomorphic animal puppets with live human performers, Taymor has made this animated coming-of-age tale the servant of her vivid imagination instead of subordinating her vision to the original work (a la "Beauty and the Beast").
The Appeal
One of the reasons for the longevity of Taymor's "The Lion King" is its all-ages appeal. Kids get to hear the Elton John-Tim Rice ballads from the movie and learn about growing up; parents get to marvel at Taymor's ingenious handiwork. If any show is likely to succeed "Cats" in the annals of history, this richly conceived feline cousin is it.
